There are health benefits to choosing to eat at these restaurants when you eat out. Maybe you haven’t thought about it, or you haven’t heard about any restaurants in your area advertise that they use food sourced from local farmers. Before I get to telling you the health benefits of locally sourced food in restaurants, let me tell you a quick story.
I had never been to one of these restaurants until a couple of years ago. I noticed that there was a new restaurant that was attached to a store I frequented. Wraps and salads were its primary focus, and so I went to this restaurant with a focus on eating healthier, not knowing that the owner got many of his ingredients from local farmers. It’s not easy for restaurant owners to do that, and it can also be a bit more costly.
It depends, too, on what all a restaurant serves on its menu. This particular restaurant had an excellent menu, but it was mostly restricted to salads and wraps. When people hear about restaurants like this, they often think first about vegetables, but locally sourced food can be other menu items as well. You might not think that eating a homegrown hamburger patty so to speak has health benefits attached to it, but it does.
It’s not about the fact that eating a burger is healthy because it’s not. It has everything to do with eating beef that is from a local cattle farm and processing plant that takes extra unnatural measures when it comes to raising cows and other livestock. You’ve certainly seen things like this discussed in the news at some point I’m sure.
Now, this restaurant that I went to wasn’t doing so well. It served up great food, but there is so much competition here when it comes to restaurants where I live. There are over 1,000 restaurants. The owner held out for as long as he could, but he finally closed his doors a few months ago. My most recent favorite local restaurant is the Kingfishers Pub in Maple Ridge, BC. A fantastic place for family and friends to enjoy local food.
If there is one in your town or city, make sure that you support it because establishments like these are important. Of course, foods from local farmers aren’t always safer and better for you. It matters how they grow their crops and handle their cattle. When a restaurant does get it right and chooses the best locally sourced food, the following are the benefits you can expect.
You can expect food with better flavor, and you can also expect food with more nutrients. You have to understand that locally grown food is going to be seasonal, and that makes it extra special. Food contamination is also a big issue when restaurants have food ingredients shipped from far away. It doesn’t mean that food is going to be contaminated, but you can be assured that local foods don’t have as much of a chance of being contaminated along the way.
Local food is also going to be very fresh. It’s more than just about the health benefits as you can see. And, if a restaurant orders food from a supplier far away, they’re not always going to know what processes have been used. However, networking with local farmers is going to mean that those restaurants know exactly how the food is sourced. It’s time to find a restaurant in your area that serves up food that is locally sourced so that you can experience the differences in person.
